Mainstream dubstep 2011

2011 is the break out year for Dubstep around the world. Dubstep has left the underground and had edged its way into the mainstream all over the world. RnB, Pop, and House have hurriedly incorporated elements of dubstep. Artists like Britney Spears, Rihanna, and La Roux have been quick to jump onto the bandwagon enlisting big names in Dubstep to help produce and remix their songs.

This post aims to give all those newcomers into dubstep some pop-dubstep to get them started.

A Skillz and Krafty Kuts Happiness on the Dancefloor

A Skillz and Krafty Kuts have been immersed in the music scene for years now. There unique breaks style has been influenced by funk, early hip hop, as well as dance music. These influences have been melded together to form a recogniseable style, often emulated but never duplicated.

Midibots vs Chevy One - Uffie Remix Competition Winner

As a producer I often check around the net for remix competitions either to enter or to scout for talent. I stumbled across this bouncey track from the Spanish based Midibots who won a remix competition. It is a devastating take on the already Uffie's hit track A.D.D.S.U.V feat Pharrell Williams.

Artist Profile - DJ and Producer Elmo is Dead

Elmo is Dead aka Emoh has been a blog golden child for sometime now. Originally a drummer in an indie rock band, Emoh infuses all his remixes with his distinct groove. Turning heads around Australia with his unique style & raw talent, Emoh has tore up festivals, uni's & clubs around the country, all the while finding time to support numerous big names like; Deadmu5, Steve Aoki, Boyz Noise, Riva Starr, Axwell, Zombie Nation and countless others.

The man behind the music Chris Emerson (who is celebrating his birthday as I am writing this!) was kind enough to answer some questions!

How do you go about making your tracks?


I just try to put a party friendly spin on my favorite tracks at the time. I'll pull apart a few different songs that sound nice together (helps if they're in key), layer the differnt vocals, groove, hookline, etc, change up the sequences & there you have it!


What is your most important tip to budding producers?

Producing is one of those things where the longer you do it, the more you realise how little you know. Best advice, get started a s early as possible, watch YouTube video's of the pro's & find a experianced person to give you a hand.


I'd suggest starting on something like ableton, making mashup, Bootlegs, etc. Keep an eye out for remix comp's! They're always a great way to get exposure

Two disco tracks here to drop. With two different vibes.

The first is by Utku S. It's the disco classic "Staying Alive" by the Bee Gees with a crazy pumping club edge added to it. This one is definitely for the DJs out there. It has an awesome build up and manages not to come off too cheesy like some disco remixes do.

Something New!?? Not really

I am a budding producer. I produce under the name "Get Low!". I follow all the big producers religiously, trying to emulate them in every way. Lately I have been amazed at how rampant sampling has become. I'm not talking about the odd drum loop or riff. I'm talking about whole songs being effectively taken!

Artist Profile - Phonat and Phonat Mashups and Remixes

Unique, innovative, rule breaking, genre-spanning…just a few of the plaudits that have been used to describe the works of Phonat, the seven foot mop-haired Italian who’s been catching the ears and attention of the ‘tastemaking set’.

Originally from Florence, Italy, Phonat (aka Michele Balduzzi) was first spotted by MofoHifi Records on MySpace and they were so impressed with the 21 year old that the loving label bosses persuaded him to leave his parents’ idyllic country farm outside Florence and move to a bed sit in Canning Town. Armed only with a five-year-old computer and an electric guitar, Phonat dutifully relocated to London in late 2007 and the rest, as they say, is history.





Now having released his highly praised debut album, ‘Phonat’, he has created a panoply of chopped up riffs swirled around murky basslines, a world where guitar-driven dancefloor fillers meet bleep-filled fantasies for fun, friendship and possibly more.

An aside note, recently Phonat was interviewed for CM Music Magazine and he gave away a big production tip. He runs almost all of his channels, even the master through CamelPhat!
